Napa Climate NOW!, a local citizens organization advocating for smart climate solutions based on the latest climate science, is pleased to announce the recipients of its first annual Napa Climate Champion Awards. Five Napa residents and two Napa organizations will be honored this coming Saturday, October 27th, during the first annual Napa Climate Bike Ride and picnic, “Connect the Dots 2018.”

Napa Valley residents and friends are invited to join this road ride, which will include stops along the way during which the honorees will receive their awards and tell their stories. The entire ride will wind up at Fuller Park in downtown Napa for a community lunch picnic and program, where representatives of the Napa County Bicycle Coalition and the Napa Valley Vine Trail Coalition will also be on hand to speak. Non-riders are welcome to attend the picnic.

Award recipients were identified from five sectors of the community – government, business, community leader, agriculture, and education. They include:

Napa County Resource Conservation District, for its leadership in soil conservation, reforestation, and carbon sequestration.
Bob Hillhouse and Bicycle Works, for nearly 40 years of bicycle advocacy, putting people on bikes, weekly rides and support of local club cycling.
Scott Sedgley, Napa City Council Member, for his environmental record and dedication to preserving Napa’s oak woodlands and watershed
David Graves, Co-Founder of Saintsbury Winery, for early adoption of solar power and ongoing climate activism
Christie Wolf (New Tech High School teacher), for inspiring her students to learn about and take action on climate change, and Martin Alvarez, Austin Larsen, and Nick Dillon (New Tech High School students or graduates), for their teamwork in creating an informative biogenic greenhouse gas exhibit to educate peers and the community about climate change.

“We are inspired by the many actions, big and small, that local Napa residents are taking to move the needle on climate change,” said Dave Kearney-Brown, Napa Climate NOW! chairman. “We are excited to be presenting these awards to community leaders from all walks of life, particularly in the context of a bicycle ride, which is one of the ways we can all help – by getting out of our cars for local trips.”

The need for decisive action to tackle climate change is quite clear, especially in light of the report released earlier this month by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC), “Global Warming of 1.5 °C.” That report stressed the urgency of taking strong action within the next dozen years in order to head off the worst effects of the climate crisis.

Bike ride participants will be able to choose from two ride routes –6.5 miles and 22 miles –both of which will travel in part on sections of the Napa Valley Vine Trail. More information in English and Spanish about this free event, including registration and bicycle routes, can be found at the Napa Climate NOW! facebook page.
